Greetings Felt United Members,

Nicola Brown and I are pleased to announce this year’s Felt United theme and we hope that you will be inspired by it…

Drum roll, please … This year’s theme is:

“Changing Seasons”

We warmly invite you to participate in this years Felt United theme, ‘Changing Seasons’ through the sharing of your felt images pertaining to the theme over on our Facebook Felt United group. The allure of nature’s changing seasons offers an endless source of inspiration…From the vibrant hues of autumn leaves to the delicate blossoms of spring, each season brings its unique magic and transformation.

Felt United is celebrated on the first Saturday in October, so this year that falls on October 7, 2023.

Please feel free to interpret the theme in any way that you wish so long as it pertains to the theme. We are requesting that you please include a short statement along with your photo. It doesn’t have to be a long statement, but it helps us in moderating the photos so that your beautiful interpretation is included, and it’s always interesting for our members to hear from the artist regarding the thinking that goes into the making.

We look forward to seeing your felt submissions, and you may begin submitting your images as soon as your felt creation is complete.
Let your imagination bloom and embrace the enchantment of the ‘Changing Seasons’ through your felt art!

If you haven’t been over to our Facebook site recently, do head over and take a look, and if your aren’t already a Felt United member, please request to join so that you may view images from past year’s Felt United themes, and in the near future you will begin to see images of this year’s theme being uploaded, too.

For those of you new to this inspirational group, or anyone wishing a refresher of our guidelines, here they are:

Felt – intertwined, bound together, forever as one – United …

Just a reminder that acceptance into this group indicates that you agree ONLY to post pictures of felt inspired by the current theme and we ask that when posting pictures please make sure to leave a short description of its inspiration. Please do not upload images with links to selling sites and limit the volume of images you post to give equal access to everyone. We ask that you give due consideration and thought into what you post and make this a meaningful experience for us all. We request a limit of no more than three images per submission and would appreciate no more than one submission per week to be uploaded by any individual member due to the rapid expansion of our group, now numbering well over 7,000 members. We look forward to seeing all of your thoughtful creations.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Felt United’s originators, Elis Vermeulen and Cynthia Reynolds , who back in 2009 set forth the goal for this group of connecting feltmakers around the globe:

“Many feltmakers are geographically disconnected from their peers. There is a diversity of lifestyle, with some living on farms producing their own fibre, and others living in cities relying on major producers for their supplies. The tie that binds them is that they make felt, in all shapes and forms, everything from sturdy carpets to ethereal scarves or installation art. The world wide web provides us with a connection that brings us together.”

Our warmest regards,
Dawn Edwards (USA) and Nicola Brown (Ireland)

2021 Felt United Theme: Emerge …

Greetings from Nicola Brown and myself, Dawn Edwards as we announce this year’s Felt United theme. After looking at several possibilities, we thought it might be good to follow up on last year’s ‘Confinement’ theme with the 2021 theme, ‘Emerge’. I know that we are all looking forward to emerging from the confinement necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and we hope that this theme will lend itself to lots of ideas and the possibility of a brighter future for all. We look forward to seeing all the ways that ‘Emerge’ might be interpreted”. Definitions/ synonyms for Emerge/Emergence include:

Emerge (verb): To be liberated or freed from something.

Emergence (noun): The process of becoming visible after being concealed or confined.

Felt United is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in October, so this year, October 2, 2021. Feltmakers from around the globe show their felt to the world, work on collaborations, celebrate, exhibit, teach, talk and share. Everybody in their own way, all united by working on the same theme, same day, same joy but different ideas.

If you haven’t been over to our Facebook site recently, do head over and take a look and if your aren’t already a Felt United member, please request to join so that you may view images from past year’s Felt United themes, and in the near future you will begin to see images of this year’s theme being uploaded.

P.S. We thank Martien van Zuilen, editor of the Australian Felt Magazine for the fabulous eight-page Felt United article in Issue 25. Here is just a little teaser for you, but do pick up a copy of the magazine and read the entire article, complete with photos from a number of the wonderful submissions for the 2020 Felt United theme which was ‘Confinement’.

2020 Felt United Theme: Confinement …

Nicola Brown and myself, Dawn Edwards, had a long Skype chat last week. Isn’t it wonderful that with today’s technologies that we have the ability to connect with friends and family during these most unusual of times? It made me happy to hear Nicola’s voice and to catch up on her life on the other side of the pond. We definitely need those connections during this extended period of social distancing and confinement. Historians are certainly documenting this extraordinary moment in history. As Nicola and I talked, we discussed several themes for Felt United 2020, but thought it would be fitting to mark this time in Felt United’s history through choosing a theme that reflects all that is currently transpiring and so chose the theme, ‘Confinement’. ‘Confinement’ will certainly mean and be interpreted differently by each of us, and that is a good thing. For some this period of confinement has been isolating, fearful and confusing. On the other side of the coin, I recently read an article from a visual artist in Spain, Cristobal Gabarrón, who stated, “As an artist, I need silence and isolation to work, so this imposed confinement didn’t disturb my daily life too much.” No matter where you fall on the confinement spectrum, perhaps in some small way through your Felt United creation and submission, you will find a way to “untrap” that sense of confinement, and work towards creating a sense of peace and resilience through a connection with others. That was, after all, the intent of Felt United’s originators, Elis Vermeulen and Cynthia Reynolds back in 2009 when they set forth the goal for this group of connecting feltmakers around the globe:

“Many feltmakers are geographically disconnected from their peers. There is a diversity of lifestyle, with some living on farms producing their own fibre, and others living in cities relying on major producers for their supplies. The tie that binds them is that they make felt, in all shapes and forms, everything from sturdy carpets to ethereal scarves or installation art. The world wide web provides us with a connection that brings us together.”

Felt United is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in October, so this year, October 3, 2020. Feltmakers from around the globe show their felt to the world, work on collaborations, celebrate, exhibit, teach, talk and share. Everybody in their own way, all united by working on the same theme, same day, same joy but different ideas.

If you haven’t been over to our Facebook site recently, do head over and take a look. Felt United … October 6, 2018 … Texture

Just two more weeks remaining until Felt United Day. Yes, Saturday, October 6, 2018 is just around the corner. Nicola and I hope that you are enjoying this year’s theme, ‘Texture’, where members of our Facebook Felt United group have been posting some amazing works with fabulous textures. Have you created your piece(s) yet? If not, no worries, you still have time to submit your image(s).  We are certainly looking forward to seeing your vision for this year’s theme. You are free to make anything that you’d like, in any colorway, so long as it has textural elements. Felt United Day…Next Saturday, October 7, 2017

Only one week remaining until Felt United Day. Yes, Saturday, October 7, 2017 is just around the corner. Nicola and I hope that you are enjoying this year’s theme, ‘Collaboration’, where artists, perhaps working across different artistic media, produce a unified work. Whether you have chosen to work with another feltmaker, or to create a piece with an artist of another media, your creation will be the fusing of two (or more) artistic ideas/styles, creating a very unique work. We hope that you have found this to be an opportunity to collaborate with someone whose work you have admired….and for both of you to not only learn more about one another’s work, but more about each other.

You still have time to submit your image. If time has gotten away from you…not to worry…While Saturday, October 7 is the official Felt United day, we will keep the window to submit photos open for an additional month. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing your vision for this year’s theme, ‘Collaboration’, and whether you submit your image over the next week, or the next month, we will be eagerly looking forward to seeing your collaborative project.

When you have a minute, do head over to Facebook to see the submissions (from this year and year’s past) from Felt United members all around the world. We look forward to seeing many more photos on our Felt United Facebook page. We also love hearing how you might celebrate International Felt United Day (October 7). 2017 Felt United Announcement…Collaboration Theme.

Nicola and I spoke via Skype this morning, putting our heads together, and came up with what we hope you will find to be an exciting theme where you and another artist, or artists, collaborate on a piece together. Perhaps that might be with someone in your own home, across the street, or even across the globe. I particularly love this focus as the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of Felt United is a bringing together, and while that’s typically been a bringing together of feltmakers, for this year’s theme, your collaborative piece allows you great freedom in conceiving brand new ideas in partnership with another. While you may certainly collaborate with another feltmaker, your options are not limited by this. Perhaps you might like to collaborate with a silversmith, leather-worker, blacksmith, ceramicist, a poet/writer, etc. … So long as the main body of work is felted.

We hope that you will agree that this is a good fit for Felt United … Artists, perhaps working across different artistic media, yet producing a unified work. Whether you choose to work with another feltmaker, or choose to create a piece with an artist of another media, your creation will be the fusing of two (or more) artistic ideas/styles, creating a very unique work. We think this will be an opportunity for all involved to work with someone whose work you have admired….and for both of you to not only learn more about one another’s work, but more about each other.

Please start thinking about who you might wish to team up with to interpret this year’s theme. We will all eagerly await your photos on our Facebook site, and please do share information about your collaborative process.
Together, We Felt United.
Dawn Edwards and Nicola Brown
P.S. Just a reminder for those of you who may be new to the group, or as a refresher for all, that Felt United is celebrated around the world on the first Saturday of October, this year’s date being October 7, 2017.
If you will be hosting an event for this year’s Felt United, please be sure to paste a link to your event on the Felt United Events page, so that others might be made aware of your happening.

Lastly, just a few reminders, regarding Felt United membership:
“Acceptance into the Felt United group indicates that you agree to post photos of felt inspired by the current theme only. When posting your photos, please include information about you, your collaborative partner and your submission. Remember, please no photos with links to selling sites (there are other sites for this and that is not the goal of Felt United). We ask that you give due consideration and thought into what you post and make this a meaningful experience for all. Again, this year, we would request that you limit your photos to no more than three images per submission and we would appreciate no more than one submission per week to be uploaded by any individual member due to the rapid expansion of our group.”

Felt United 2016…October 1 is fast approaching…

Well, it’s hard to believe but our 2016 Felt United day is just a little over two months away. Yes, Saturday, October 1, 2016 is just around the corner. I hope that you are enjoying this year’s theme, ‘Naked Beauty – A Celebration of Felt and Fibre in Beautiful Varied Natural Colours’.  If you haven’t yet begun to formulate your submission for this year’s theme, I’ve attached several fabulous images to whet your appetite and hope that you will find inspiration through these photos. And, the good news…You still have time to submit your image…..Just pull out that stash of undyed wool and let the creativity flow. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing your vision for this year’s theme.

When you have a minute, do head over to Facebook to see the submissions (from this year and year’s past) from Felt United members all around the world. We look forward to seeing many more photos on our Felt United Facebook page. We also love hearing how you might celebrate International Felt United Day (October 1). Once you’ve made your plans, please be sure to paste a link to your event on the Felt United Events page so that others in your area are made aware of what’s taking place.

Please remember when adding your photos to the Facebook page for this year’s theme, we’re accepting entries with felt created exclusively from fibre which has not been dyed; wool, alpaca, yak, camel, goat, dogs hair, whatever takes your fancy so long as it is the natural colour directly from the animal. For this challenge we also request that any embellishing fibres used are not dyed; silk, tencel, linen, ramie, hemp, milk fibre etc., etc.

We wish everyone all the best for Felt United 2016. Let’s make this a celebration of all that’s natural and an homage to the many wonderful sheep breeds and fibre producing animals that there are out there!

Here’s to creativity, worldwide friendships, and of course, our love of feltmaking. Looking forward to your continued 2016 Felt United interpretations.

Together, We Felt United,

Dawn Edwards and Nicola Brown

Our 2015 Felt United Theme is…’HOME’

Greetings all! Well, can you believe it? It’s time to announce this year’s Felt United theme, which for 2015 will be … ‘HhomeOME’. What does home mean to you? The word likely brings up different images for each and every one of us, so we greatly look forward to seeing how you define and interpret ‘Home’. It may be an actual geographical place, or perhaps a place you envision only in your imagination. It may be a source of identity or a state of being. It may be a feeling of security/insecurity, comfort or pain.  Whatever you envision, we invite you to explore through your felt creations, what the word ‘Home’ means to you.

Just a reminder that Felt United is celebrated around the world on the first Saturday of October, this year, October 3, 2015. In addition to your photos, which we look forward to seeing on the Felt United Facebook page, please also consider how you might be able to share your love of feltmaking with others. Perhaps a collaborative effort, or a gathering with other feltmakers to share your love of felting through an exhibition, perhaps an open studio, or something as simple as inviting a neighbor/friend over to see what you do. Whatever you decide to do in celebration on October 3, 2015, know that your feltmaking friends are celebrating in some way all around the world. Please be sure to paste a link to your event on the Felt United Events page.

Lastly, just a few reminders, regarding Felt United membership:

“Acceptance into the Felt United group indicates that you agree to post photos of felt inspired by the current theme only (this year’s theme is ‘Home’). In order to have your photo approved and posted to the Felt United Facebook page, we are requiring that all submissions include a short explanation of how the image relates to the ‘Home’ theme. Do not upload images with links to selling sites. We ask that you give due consideration and thought into what you post and make this a meaningful experience for all. Again, this year, we would request that you limit your photos to no more than three images per submission and we would appreciate no more than one submission per week to be uploaded by any individual member due to the rapid expansion of our group (now at over 5,300 members…wow!).

Here’s to creativity, worldwide friendships, and of course, feltmaking. We hope that you will find this year’s theme, as with the themes of years past, to be a path for us to get to know one another better….this year by learning about you and your connection to home.

Together, We Felt United.

Felt United 2014 … Two Months (and a tad) and Counting

Can you believe that Felt United day is just a little over two months away? Yes, Saturday, October 4, 2014 will be here before we know it! I hope that you have begun to formulate your thoughts and ideas as to how this year’s theme, Peace, might be represented in your felt work. We’ve heard from a few of you that this year’s theme is in some ways, more challenging….How to interpret such a subjective theme in your felt work. But, as always, you are more than rising to the occasion…in wonderful and thoughtful ways. I’ll share a few of the images of the ‘Peace’ related felt art that have already been submitted at the end of this post. And, if you wish to read more about those images and/or the artists who created them, just head over to the Felt United Facebook page.

We hope that you are being inspired by this year’s theme and we look forward to seeing more photos. We also love hearing how you might celebrate International Felt United Day (October 4). Have you begun to make plans yet? Perhaps an exhibition, a collaborative effort, or a gathering with other feltmakers to share your love of felting, or ????? The possibilities are endless. Once you make your plans, please be sure to paste a link to your event on the Felt United Events page so that others in your area are aware of what’s going on.

Please remember when adding your photos to the Facebook page, that if it’s not readily apparent as to how your submission relates to the ‘Peace’ theme, to add a short explanation.

Here’s to creativity, peace, worldwide friendships, and of course, feltmaking. Looking forward to your continued 2014 Felt United ‘Peace’ interpretations.
